Local Attractions

There is something to do for everyone ...

For those looking for an active break, our proximity to the South Downs makes available to you some of the best walking and cycling areas in South England. We would be happy to make suggestions and offer advice.

If your taste runs to exploring historic houses, you will find several close by. We recommend Parham House (www.parhaminsussex.co.uk) or Petworth Park House and Uppark House (both maintained by the National Trust - www.nationaltrust.org.uk). They provide wonderful walks and several hours of interesting viewing. In addition, Goodwood House and race circuit (www.goodwood.co.uk) are within a 30 minute drive and provide a superb day out.

If the horses call to you, there's more racing at Fontwell Park (www.fontwellpark.co.uk) and competitive polo at Cowdray Park (www.cowdraypolo.co.uk).

For a more active day out, you might wish to consider a round of golf at our local course - West Chiltington (www.westchiltgolf.co.uk) or learning to glide at the South Downs Gliding centre (www.sgc1.org).

Wine lovers will surely want to visit our fantastic local vineyards. We have two very close to the Old School House - Nutbourne Vineyard (www.nutbournevineyards.com) and the renowned Nyetimber Vineyard (www.nyetimber.com) where the award-winning European sparkling wine is produced.

If your interest is more towards learning and culture then you will want to visit the fascinating working museum at Amberley Museum (www.amberleymuseum.co.uk) where local crafts people keep alive the industrial heritage of the area. And catch a glimpse of an even older time by visiting the remains of the Roman Empire at the Fishbourne Roman Palace (www.sussexpast.co.uk/fishbourne).

Maybe you like to relax with a bit of shopping. If so, the major and delightful shopping areas of Chichester and Brighton are each within a short drive of the area, and also offer the chance to visit the world-renowned Chichester Cathedral or spend a day at the seaside in Brighton or visit the fabulous Royal Pavillion.

If you are interested in antiques, then specialist shops abound in Petworth, Chichester and Midhurst – in fact in Petworth alone there are reputed to be 39 – so the choice is wide and varied for the antique lover.

Finally, you might like to sit back and enjoy the night sky. Never mind if it's cloudy, you can see the stars in all their glory at the Southdowns Planetarium (www.southdowns.org.uk).

And if you'd like more recommendations of places to visit, we would be more than happy to make additional suggestions.
